- This program is public domain. It may not be resold
- alone or as part of any other package without prior
- consent.
-
- New Features
- ------------
-
- Support for PGC (compressed files), see below.
- Now supports EGA as well as VGA !!
- Print Shop image import
- PGSHOW no longer included in this archive file
-
- Description
- -----------
-
- PGEDIT allows you to create, edit, and modify PGC graphic
- files for use on the Atari Portfolio.
-
- NOTE: The PGF file format has been replaced with the PGC
- (compressed) format. This new format allows images to be
- compressed to save disk (ram card) space. Typical compression
- creates files from 20 to 70% of their original size.
-
- This version of PGEDIT will load PGF or PGC files, with PGC
- being the default. It will not let you save a file in PGF
- format anymore.
-
- The PGC format is the preferred format because of it's space
- savings. However, some future utilites and programs will only
- output PGF format files. That's a decision the program's
- author has to make. If you end up with PGF format files, they
- can easily be converted to PGC format by loading them into
- PGEDIT and immediately saving them back to disk. They can also
- be converted with PGCOMP.EXE by Software Vineyard.
-
- PGC files can be viewed on the Portfolio with:
-
- PGSHOW.EXE 1.10 (c)1990 Software Vineyard
-
- PGC files can be shown, loaded or saved with PBASIC 3.1.
- (PBASIC is (c)1990 BJ Gleason)
-
- Old PGF files can be viewed on the Portfolio with:
-
- PGSHOW.EXE 1.00 (c)1990 Software Vineyard
- PGF.COM (c)1990 BJ Gleason
-
- PGEDIT runs under it's own graphical user interface and thus
- requires a mouse and VGA card. (See System Requirements below)
- The user interface is very simple to use. All actions are
- performed by clicking on a "button" on the screen. This
- version of PGEDIT has many features. It is lacking in
- the area of drawing tools. There are no box, line, or circle
- drawing tools. There is also no cut and paste. These features
- will be addressed in a future version.
-
- There are quite a few picture manipulation features. These
- include Reverse image, center horizonally/vertically, flip
- horizontally/vertically, and move one pixel up/down/left/right.
-
- For those who don't want to start with a blank slate, PGEDIT
- also allows you to import a piece of a MacPaint file or a Print
- Shop image. Future versions will also support importing from IMG,
- PCX, GIF, and TIFF files.
-
- System Requirements
- -------------------
-
- PGEDIT does not run on the Atari Portfolio!!!
-
- PGEDIT requires an IBM compatible running DOS 3.1 or higher
- with 512 K of memory (360 K free), EGA or VGA graphics card, and
- a Microsoft compatible mouse.
-
- This program does not require a hard drive. It will run
- from a single 360K floppy drive with no problem (albeit slowly).
-
- Using the program
- -----------------
-
- Turning dots on and off
-
- Toggle dots on and off by clicking in the large grid. The
- large grid represents 1/5 of the complete image width.
- It shows the complete image height at all times. The 5
- sections of the image are referred to as panes in this manual.
-
- Moving from pane to pane
-
- There are two ways to move from pane to pane. The five buttons
- numbered 1 2 3 4 5 can be clicked on. The current pane number is
- black in color. You can also click in the thumbnail sketch
- of the complete image (located in the lower left corner of
- the screen). You will not move to the exact dot on the grid
- you click on, just the pane that dot is in. There are light
- blue hash marks under the thumbnail sketch to show where
- the panes lie.
-
- Clicking on a button doesn't seem to do anything!
-
- If you click on a button and it doesn't seem to do anything,
- try clicking on it again. Whenever you click on a button,
- the mouse pointer should disappear while the action is being
- performed.
-
- What do all the buttons do?
- ---------------------------
-
- NEW Clears the grid for work on a new image. PGEDIT
- doesn't currently ask you whether you are sure
- you want to do this. See the UNDO feature description.
-
- LOAD Load an existing image from disk. You don't have
- to include the .PGF extension. It is the default.
- There are only enough characters for the filename
- and extension, so it must be in the current
- directory. A much better file requester will show
- up in a future version.
-
- If you decide not to load an image, just press the
- ESC key.
-
- SAVE Save the current image to disk. The last filename
- loaded is the default. If you don't include an
- extension of the filename, a .PGF will be appended.
-
- If you decide not to save the image, just press the
- ESC key.
-
- QUIT Leave PGEDIT. You will NOT be asked if you are sure
- or if you want to save the current image.
-
- IMPORT Import from a MacPaint or Print Shop file. A dialog box
- will appear asking what type of file you wish to import
- from. Click on the appropriate button or click on the
- CANCEL button if you don't wish to import anything.
-
- Mac Paint Import
- ----------------
- You will be asked for the name of the MacPaint file.
- If you leave off the extension, .MAC is assumed.
-
- The picture is presented in a window. Use the arrow
- keys to put the part of the picture you want to import
- inside the red box. Press RETURN. I know this box is small.
- So is the Portfolio's screen.
-
- The home, end, page-up, page-down, ctrl-left, and ctrl-right
- move in bigger increments.
-
- If you decide not to import the image, just press
- the ESC key.
-
- Print Shop Import
- -----------------
- You will be asked for the name of the Print Shop file.
- If you leave off the extension, .DAT is assumed. If you
- have image files specifically for "The New Print Shop",
- they must have a .PNG extension or they won't be handled
- properly.
-
- The Print Shop images are presented five at a time in a
- window. Move the red box with the arrow keys to choose
- which image to import. Press RETURN to import it. The
- image will be centered in the grid.
-
- The home, end, page-up, page-down, ctrl-left, and ctrl-right
- move in bigger increments.
-
- If you decide not to import an image, just press the ESC
- key.
-
- REV Reverse the image. Changes white dots to black and
- vice-versa.
-
- U D L R These buttons move the picture inside the grid by
- one pixel in the specified direction. U for Up,
- D for Down, L for Left, R for Right. If any dots
- "fall off" the edge of the grid, they are lost.
- Creative use of the UNDO button (press it!) will
- pick those dots up off of the inside of your monitor
- and glue them back on the screen.
-
- FLIPH Flip the image horizontally, as if holding it up
- to a mirror.
-
- FLIPV Flip the image vertically, as if hanging upside down
- from your ceiling.
-
- Ctr H Center the image in the grid horizontally. This
- figures out the furthest left dot and the furthest
- right dot and then center the image from left to
- right.
-
- Ctr V Center the image vertically in the grid. This
- figures out the top and bottom dots and centers
- the image from top to bottom.
-
- VIEW View the image at 200% of it's normal size. Good for
- seeing that fine detail that you won't see on the
- Portfolio's screen anyway. Click the mouse button
- or press a key to continue.
-
- UNDO Undoes the last action you performed. If all you
- did was toggle a dot on or off, this button will
- not undo it. Some actions can, of course, be undone
- by clicking on other action buttons. (i.e. FLIPV)
-
